Learned helplessness is a psychological condition in which a human being or an animal has learned to believe that it is helpless in a particular situation. It has come to believe that it has no control over its situation and that whatever it does is futile. As a result, the human being or the animal will stay passive in the face of an unpleasant, harmful or damaging situation, even when it does actually have the power to change its circumstances. "I feel like this is my church - my children were all baptized here," said Joyce Stone, 76, who has belonged to the church since 1959. "We're going to try to hang onto it for a while and see, hoping we can bring in some young people, with children. I have a lot of faith it will go on."
This quote smacked me in the face, where I was left wondering just what Ms. Stone was doing to accomplish her lofty goal. Is she being a missionary, talking to her grandchildren and their generation?
Or, is she relying on prayer?
Prayer is great. But, other churches in her area that are hurting are praying the very same prayer. Add action with the prayer, and that will be the church that will be successful in the goal.
Much work to be done... :(
